How to Play Queens

The board is divided into coloured regions. Your goal is to place exactly one queen ๐Ÿ‘‘ in:

  • every row,
  • every column, and
  • every colour region.

Two queens can never touch, not even diagonally. Queens that break a rule are shown with red stripes.

Every puzzle has exactly one solution, and it can always be found by logic alone, without guessing.

Daily puzzle and unlimited mode

The Daily Puzzle is the same for everyone and changes at midnight UTC. Solve it each day to build your streak, then share your time with colleagues. In Unlimited mode you can play as many new puzzles as you like on 6ร—6, 7ร—7, 8ร—8 or 9ร—9 boards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same as the Queens game on LinkedIn?

It uses the same classic rules (one queen per row, column and colour region, with no queens touching), so if you enjoy that game you will feel at home here. This is an independent version with its own puzzles and is not affiliated with LinkedIn. Unlike a once-a-day game, you can play unlimited puzzles here.

How do I mark cells I know are empty?

Tap a cell once to place an โœ•. Marking cells that cannot hold a queen is the key to solving harder boards. You can drag across several cells to mark them all at once.

What does the hint do?

A hint places one correct queen on the board (and removes a wrong queen from that row if there is one). Hints are counted in your shared result, so try to use as few as possible.

Is my daily progress saved?

Yes. Your progress on the daily puzzle and your streak are saved in this browser, so you can close the page and come back later on the same device.

Which board size should I start with?

Start with 6ร—6 or 7ร—7 to learn the patterns, then move up. 9ร—9 boards are noticeably harder because there are more regions to keep track of.

Queens Tips & Strategy

  • Start with the smallest colour region. A region with only two or three cells limits where its queen can go, and often fixes it straight away.
  • Look for regions that sit entirely in one row or one column. That row or column is then "owned" by the region, so mark every other cell in it with an โœ•.
  • Use the touching rule. Once a queen is placed, mark all eight surrounding cells, plus the rest of its row, column and region.
  • Count regions against rows. If two regions fit entirely inside the same two rows, those two rows are used up, and no other region can place a queen there.
  • Mark generously. Most of the solving happens with โœ• marks; the queens appear almost by themselves once enough cells are ruled out.
  • Never guess. Every puzzle has exactly one solution reachable by logic, so if you feel stuck, look for a region or row with only one possible cell left.

Playing Queens with Your Team

Queens is a great daily ritual for a team chat. Everyone plays the same Daily Puzzle, then posts their shared result (time and hints) in Slack or Teams. Keep a weekly tally of the fastest solver, or play an Unlimited 9ร—9 board together on a shared screen and let the room suggest each move.
